What a beautiful piece, Elaine! I love that you use even your darkest experiences to bring light to the rest of us. Wishing you speedy and complete healing <3
I can’t imagine how you have managed. Beyond excruciating pain, utter exhaustion, and struggling with aloneness, you could not SPEAK, use YOUR VOICE, because are a right-handed WRITER.
YOUR WRITTEN WORD serves as your caldron for processing. Writing is your art and the truest expression of your self, your soul. NOT being able to write - I imagine that alone created epic grief, upon grief and more grief. I am sobbing with YOU.
In this post, more accurately an open-hearted sharing…you capture the torture of suffering with time, experience, memory, and reality. And you do so with exquisite language that renders all bare.
What a blessing you and your writing are. With gratitude and love, Nan
Oh, Elaine - So sorry to hear about your crisis. Your discerning essay is an important reminder of our frailty - there but for the grace of God is true every day for each of us in so many areas of life here on earth. Praying for your full recovery!
Oh, wow. As I read your piece, with 12th night quickly approaching, I feel humor, I feel embarrassed at not taking what I did know about your humerus as seriously as I could have. I mean really, I could have helped open jars, drive cars, etc. I'm not so good with hair-styling. Please put me on your list of people to call when you need someone to do stuff. Maybe our church needs an "inventory list" of acts of helping people are willing to do for friends who need a little help from their friends. Seriously. Facebook message me or call me. I am often available, and goodness knows, we can all add a few more "good deeds" to our lists!
Oh, Gary, what a generous soul. Thank you! You are a dear. Luckily, I am making progress with physical therapy, but if you ever want to master the curling iron, just let me know.💜💖
I am grateful to read this piece. You absolutely touch my heart and soul with your written take on this “holiday humerus experience”. This writing is so soulful, relateable and human! You share a unique, yet universal experience of our vulnerability and the need for connection. You also describe who showed up for you during another difficult episode of life. It's great how you took multiple injuries (physical and emotional) and showed us some lessons we can learn and how positive growth can be acquired through difficult times ( you certainly have had more than your share) if we are open to the life lessons these experiences give us. That you stay open and curious in your approach to multiple adversities sets such a positive example to live by. Also your writing is unique and so full of meaning. I so appreciate this piece and I respect and admire that you took such difficult situations and created art with this piece.
Oh Sue, you are my angel and my muse on our difficult and profound journeys -- as we care for each other from afar. Your words and presence buoy and inspire me in ways that are difficult to adequately articulate. I love you, dear friend.💜
“I needed to recognize my own humanity and the fact that we all teeter on the edge of disaster most of the time. That’s why we all need a hand to grab as we extend the other — I’ll get here soon enough.” Love this image, Elaine. Sending healing wishes and gratitude to and for you this new year.
